Aaron Copland ~ 1900-1990 This is the complete Orchestral Suite, not the Ballet Suite. Copland’s “Billy the Kid” was commissioned by Lincoln Kirstein for his ballet company, Ballet Caravan, in 1938. The hope was to create an “American” ballet, to counteract the Russian tradition so popular in ballet for centuries. The result, and I’ll quote as I know the music but don’t know ballet, was, “the first full-fledged American ballet in style and form as well as content,” according to the choreographer of the ballet, Eugene Loring. As I said, I don’t know ballet, but I know classical music and this is a wonderful piece of music regardless of the reason for its composition. Presented here is the first of three sections (I seperated them to make them fit YouTube’s 10:00 minute reequirement; hope that doesn’t ruin the flow) that make up the entire Suite for Orchestra which came directly from the ballet with very little change from the ballet score. The Suite was split in to 7 pieces by Copland and, though I don’t know, and I apologize, where each begins or ends, I’m sure my educated guess as to the end of each piece and the beginning of the next is accurate, but I haven’t noted my guesses in the video. Top 2009 In Concert afspeellijst: bit.lyJamie Cullum, Rowwen Heze, Spandau Ballet… De opnames voor ‘Top 2000 In Concert 2009′ waren knallend. Heen Al op de heenreis in de trein zit de stemming er goed in. Top 2009 In Concert-gangers pik je er zo uit: ze zijn feestelijk gekleed, zelden alleen en je ziet aan alles dat ze er zin in hebben. ‘Spandau Ballet, daar heb ik zin in!’ ‘Ah nee, die zijn oud, Ruth Jackott, dat is pas een lekker ding!’ Er wordt hartelijk gelachen. HMH De Heineken Music Hall is bij binnenkomst groot als altijd, maar anders dan bij sommige ‘gewone’ concerten is de sfeer intiem en vooral: gezellig! De ruimte heeft met alle mooi geklede en enthousiaste mensen meer weg van een Grand Café op oudejaarsavond dan van een concerthal. Wel een sjiek Grand Café overigens, want het podium is prachtig aangekleed, lange witte doeken zijn achter en boven het podium gedrapeerd, de verlichting doet de rest. En dan: in welk café zou je op één avond Guus Meeuwis, Acda en de Munnik, en Boudewijn de Groot tegen het lijf kunnen lopen? Concert Het publiek bruist, het bier schuimt. Jeroen van der Boom knalt en gaat op de knieën. Wat een showman. Nick en Simon klinken als zilv’ren klokjes. De band van Rowwen Hèze bestaat volgend jaar 25 jaar, Jack en Tren brachten hun karakteristieke geluid. Guus Meeuwis is een goede host en de artiesten en het publiek weten sfeer te brengen én te houden. Als hoogtepunten komen zeker in aanmerking Spandau Ballet en Jamie Cullum. Al waren ook …
